Interview continues after leap..
What were the first records that really made you go, “WOW” ?
“Music for the Jilted Generation” by the Prodigy and Leftfield’s “Leftism” particularly the tracks “Their Law” and “Song of Life” respectively really awakened me in my early teens to the power of electronic music.Having passed through the hard house and Trance phases it was then the track “Crispy Bacon” by Laurent Garnier that got me hooked on Techno for a while. In terms of the stuff I play these days,it was the track “Truper (Photek) Street Beats Vol 2″ on Coldcut’s Journeys by DJ mix that made me go mad for jungle and the track by Alchemyst – “LFO Business” that turned my dubstep buttons on.
Describe the sound of a Welfare Set.
Hmm suppose these days it sets off with Dub runners, then some wibbly wobbly wonders followed by filthier shit and then onto Old School Jungle topped with unapologetic speedy and coarse Drum n Bass
Where are you from originally ? Where are you based now ?
From Monaghan, home of Patrick Kavanagh, crap hash and what was Ireland’s biggest shiteclub (Enigma) during the 90s – based in Dublin and various countries since 2000
How/when did you first begin playing music ?
I reluctantly played the piano from age 7 until 13 (although now I’m glad I did), then took a short stab at guitar just prior to hearing the above mentioned records – that was the end of that! Picked up a set of turntables in 2005 after having saved up me dole and I was christened “Welfare” in honour of this by my stoner flatmates.
Which current artists/records do you really love ?
DnB/Jungle-wise – Original Sin,Chase and Status,Mr Free X, DJ C,Nightwalker,Sub Focus, Nero
Standout tunes of the year for me were “No getting out” by Vital Elements, Track 1 on a white label thats by a new guy called “Woodpecker” “Junglist” by Mr Free X and “Brazil” by Chase and Status – all floor-destroyers
Dubstep/Grime-Wise -Jakes,Alien Pimp,Bar 9,Stenchman,Goth Trad and 2562 – from the home shores Major Grave,Grizzle and 16HZ – 16 Tons had me leggin it round me kitchen
Standout tunes for me at the moment are “The Clown” by Goth Trad, “No Good” by Radikal Guru “Old Timers” by DZ,”Beat the Banker” by Stenchman and “Area” by Optimus and Droid – rthat one reminds me of someone struglling with a particularly chewy chocolate bar
What, for you, is the most important thing about music ?
That people have the craic
What’s the most memorable DJ set you’ve ever played ?
That would have to be in The Junction,Galway with DJ Filth last May. Place was absolutely hoppin’ for 4 hours,Ive never seen energy like it – people just came in and went straight to the floor and stayed there all night – after 4 hours of Jungle and DnB madness we finished off with “Hits from the Bong” by Cypress Hill and the whole place was singin’ along with arms around one another – fuckin classic night!
What’s the best night in your home town right now?
Its got to be either ye olde Redrum or !Kaboogie – all the work put in by Kaboogie over the past cupla years has contributed so much, this has been really complimented by the Redrum extravageansaís the nights are electric – makin the effort to get that extra bassy sound system in really pays off – fair dues
