Who is Notoriously Gorgeous?
The manifestation of my Id.
What were the first records that really made you go, “WOW” ?
Hixxy – Come Together, Paul Gabriel – Sledgehammer, Michael Jackson – Leave me Alone: I suppose it was the videos that would make them really WOW worthy. Not a specialist subject mind, as my first record was Chesney Hawkes. I think though that the first time a record made me go WOW, was watching Scan7 playing detroit techno when I was around 16. I never understood the impact that dance music could have on a crowd. It was just purely about great rhythms and sounds, and dark rooms. Soon after that I was out every night I could, going to see just about everything I could.
Describe the sound of a NG Set.
It’s about as dubstep as you can get. Fat bass, raggae vocals, sharp synths, 2-step, a best of 2008 so far I guess. Dubstep has a lot of different styles, but the beauty of it is the riddims fit so well into each other, not just making the it easier for the DJ, but easier for the crowd to stay focused and keep dancing without getting too bored, and occasionally when it drops go a little bit mental.
Where are you from originally ? Where are you based now ?
The unholy mess of a suburb Leixlip, famed for Guinness, umm, and it’s sprawling suburban estates that just don’t stop.
How/when did you first begin playing music ?
I think like everyone I picked up a guitar when I was around 12, and failed miserably. Then I think it was around the time when FruityLoops came out I started to get interested in computer music. I think a lot of people did. It didn’t need a huge amount of knowledge to get started, it had lots of built in sounds, and paved the way for a lot of people. I promise of a electro-pop version of Foreigner “I wanna know what love is” soon.
Which current artists/records do you really love ?
Why? – Alopecia, Joker, Ed Devane’s live sets, the new Portishead record, Flying Lotus, and DJ PCP sick sets. Starkey and 6blocc as well has a lot of good bassy music out, bringing the US bass sound to European shores at last, bringing their own distinctive flavours.
What, for you, is the most important thing about music ?
The fun that it creates. It used to be the emotion it carried, but then I think Captain Ahab set me straight.
What’s the most memorable DJ set you’ve ever played ?
It was a little party in South Circular Road, where it was meant to be 10 – 20 people, which turned into around 300 over the course of the night. A shed out the back was broken into to allow a good oul seisún to happen. Actually, that’s the only DJ set I’ve played live…
What’s the best night in your home town right now?
I’m a bit biased, but I don’t think you can beat the atmosphere at !kaboogie and wobble gigs. Those guys have been bringing over fresh artists to Dublin for a long time. Anyone who was at The Bug and Warrior Queen in Traffic last year will tell you.
