Ina Di Dancehall Wi Mr T

toddla3.jpg

I mentioned this guy over at the old site, where I’d come across him via an interview carried on Prancehall. Anybody that has had to wait out the obligatory fifteen minutes for a serving of roti, with the hungry roar of their stomach’s full apprehension should have some sympathy with the ragga narrative in Fill Up Ma Portion. Other than that though, I reckon most of you should still get on grand with this sine wave terrorist from a little old city in England where they used to make steel. Be sure to check out his ghettoblaster mix tape, I’m Sheffeeeelin’ it.

Who is the Toddla T?

Skinny tall gormy lad from Steel City who’s real name is Tom Bell

What were the first records that really made you go, “WOW” ?

Notorious BIG – Ready To Die

Describe the sound of a Toddla Set?

Alot of bottom heavy action, all quite up party but at the same time tryna push new music but without it being a geek off, i still want people to jump about n have fun, nuttin to up its own batty but semi serious.. (i like to think)

Where are you from originally ? Where are you based now ?

Park Hill,Sheffield … Park Hill,Sheffield – S2 fi life!

How/when did you first begin playing music?

Ive had decks since i was about 12 but they were kinda unusable cus they never had a pitch, but i got some half decent ones when i was about 15 after savin for agggess..
i just loved music n wanted to put it together.

Which current artists/records do you really love?

Im really feeling what DJ C is up too, The Count Sinden are still wackin em out.. Benga,Dub Militia,Heatwave .. theres alot of wicked bass heavy business comin out of the uk across different genre’s..

Im also gettin exited about bands for the first time in my life… Listening to The Metros,These New Puritans The Kills.

What, for you, is the most important thing about music ?

I s’pose its makin’ sure people are havin’ a good time, whether it be in a club or in a CD player, but makin’ sure I’m happy with it too..

What’s the most memorable DJ set you’ve ever played?

Probably the early ones, one time i played with DJ Pipes (my hero) at a club in Sheffield when i was about 19.. it was one of my 1st club gigs, and the club was a tech house night, we was playin Garage,Jungle,Broken,Dancehall everything… at a time when this sound was completly new to people, but it proper went off.. I was worried before the gig cus i didnt own a single house record!!…

Which of your remixes are you most proud of and why?

I really like the Roisin Murphy one… mainly cus ive got so much respect for her. I was shocked when they accepted it. Plus girls seem to dig that rmx the most which is a good luck for T Willy. But im always real happy when rmx’s get accepted.

What’s the best night in your home town right now?

KABAL… me,Pipes Winston Hazel pushin the steel city sonic!

About STFT.com

In the olden days there was the zine, a photocopied melange of thoughts and images cut out with stanley knives, and flung together in an act of love making to both words and whatever part of culture, society or politics they tried to give meaning to. Here at Soundtracksforthem, we’re really just a zine too. Although, a zine where the maker has replaced the Stanley knife with Photoshop’s polygonal lasoo tool. Hands that once, may have been messy with glue are now eyes sore from poring over php code.
