Vidiot: Irish Celebration Song

Ah yes, “a rebellious nation of freckle faced hustlers.” Ever since I read the auto-biography of Larry Kirwan, leader of Black 47, those 1980′s specialists in punked up “fiddly diddly diddily dee funky ceili” – I’ve had to censor that part of me thats loath to see raucous expressions of Irish Americanism.  Especially when they often seem so misjudged, hackneyed and out of place.  Reading his book, it all seemed to make sense for a while.  That’s it really, they are out of place – and what seems daft to us, stands as a desperate expression of perceived community by a dislocated migrant population.

But this here really takes it to extremes.  Clearly, Macklemore hasn’t read that recent Vanity Fair article about how we were “the first European country to watch its entire banking system fail, and yet its business-friendly conservative party, Fianna Fáil…would remain in office into 2011.” Cue lots of fighting Irish tripe and celebrations of dour alcoholic fathers.

You can watch it now if you like.  But personally, I’d say this here video is one best enjoyed under the utter dread of your next hang over, when you really think your head needs cabbaging in a microwave. This here is the tune to push you over.

About STFT.com

In the olden days there was the zine, a photocopied melange of thoughts and images cut out with stanley knives, and flung together in an act of love making to both words and whatever part of culture, society or politics they tried to give meaning to. Here at Soundtracksforthem, we’re really just a zine too. Although, a zine where the maker has replaced the Stanley knife with Photoshop’s polygonal lasoo tool. Hands that once, may have been messy with glue are now eyes sore from poring over php code.
